Christopher Dahm: Collect (2019)
Sound Installation
Dommuseum Fulda
coin funnel / contact microphones / electronics / four speakers
By its acoustic signals, this sound sculpture reminds of the different forms of coin collection in churches. The sounds are related to the material and texture of different coins. The name refers to the accumulation of wealth by the Church through coins, such as donations and church taxes. The basis of the sculpture is a coin funnel made of Plexiglas and plastic. Using contact microphones, the movement sound of the coins, as they circulate down in the funnel, is recorded and converted in a mini-computer into midi signals. These notes are sent into a digital synthesizer that imitates the materials copper, bronze, silver and gold. The sounds thus generated are played out via loudspeakers embedded in the coin funnel. It mixes digital and analog sounds of circling coins. Depending on the material and number of coins in the hopper, the sound in the room changes. As additional effect, the architecture of the room provides interesting reverb and echo effects.

Christopher Dahm: GRP
Selfmade photos become source for a digital manipulation process, inspired by effect of gravitation and rotation. For the photo motives I look for clear color contrasts in small spcaces.
Size: 40 x 40 cm. Every print is a unique piece. Digital version gets deleted after print.

Soundboard
photo board / electronic buttons / mini-audioplayer / headphone
This soundboard focuses on nine local recreation areas, officially chosen by the city of Mainz, which are located in or adjacent to the city area. With this work, I wanted to investigate whether the local soundscapes are associated with the meaning of the term "recreation". What does local recreation sound like? To answer this question, I went through all nine areas one after the other. At each location I defined a recording spot where I set up a camera and a surround microphone. After each photo session I recorded the local sound collage for ten minutes. The result of this research was designed as an interactive soundboard.

Multimedia Installation
1 beamer or screen / loudspeakers / media player
For this concept of video installations I record 360° movies while walking at locations I feel close to. All light, colors and structures are captured by the 360° camera and get re-arranged in post, inspired by astro-physical laws. For Sound Design I use site specific audio recordings, which get re-composed in a digital workflow. This example was recorded in a church and on the streets of my hometown Mainz, Germany.

Christopher Dahm: Chapter 8 (2019)
Sound Installation
University Mainz
drip hose / trays / bowls / pipe clamps / plants / drinking water
In this installation, a water hose is attached to the edges of the walls close to the rose beds. The hose drips down at various points. Between wall and roses, aluminum objects of various sizes are arranged. Due to the impact of water droplets and their size, the aluminium objects sound in different pitches and rhythms.
The aluminum visually reflects the roses, the image of the viewer and the sunlight from different perspectives. The work refers to beauty, vanity and transience. In chapter 8 of his book „The Little Prince“ Antoine de Saint-Exupéry addresses this relationship child-friendly and profound at the same time.

Sound Installation
Karmeliterkirche Mainz
1 speaker / 6 mirrors / 6 transducers
The space becomes an instrument and determines the composition. Character and texture of the room serve as a source of an impulse sound: resonating architectural elements are recorded with contact microphones. During the installation, the recorded impulse sound is played out over a speaker placed in the room, pointing in direction of the first mirror. Sound transducers are attached to the mirrors, which cause the mirrors to vibrate. The mirrors take over the function of a loudspeaker diaphragm.
Through ongoing reflections, the sound enters into a dialogue with the architectural and acoustic environment. Due to the distance between the mirrors, the architecture and speed of sound determine the sound rhythm of the room composition. By moving in space, the audience – depending on distance and angle to speakers and mirrors – both acoustic and visual perspectives change. Every new angle of view and hearing results in a different spatial experience.
